Double-Deck Skybridge Adjoins George R. Brown Convention Center
With Houston’s New 1,200-room Convention Hotel
HOUSTON (October 7, 2002) – With a little more than a year of construction remaining, the Hilton Americas – Houston and the George R. Brown Convention Center are now truly “joined at the hip.” Steelworkers recently lifted into place a 110-ton pedestrian skybridge that will connect the two downtown landmarks.
Turner Construction Company successfully hoisted the 140-foot, double-deck bridge onto concrete moorings that span the convention center and the hotel. When construction is complete in the fall of 2003, convention-goers and hotel guests will be able to traverse the two buildings on two levels.
“It is quite an incredible sight to see a 110-ton steel structure suspended in mid-air and lowered into place,” said David Villarrubia, hotel general manager. “Although the day-to-day construction activities are quite exciting, the installation of this skybridge is a symbolic step that vividly demonstrates how the Hilton Americas – Houston and the George R. Brown Convention Center will be linked to one another.”
Two additional skybridges will be mounted at a later date to adjoin a shared parking garage with easy and direct access to both the convention center and the hotel.
With 1,200 guestrooms, the Hilton Americas – Houston will be the largest hotel in Houston. The full-service convention hotel also will feature 91,500 square feet of flexible meeting space, a business center, three restaurants, health spa and the largest ballroom in the city.
The George R. Brown Convention Center is undergoing an expansion project that will virtually double the amount of exhibition, meeting and registration space. At more than 1.8 million gross square feet, it will be the largest convention facility in Houston and also will begin welcoming convention delegates and visitors to their new facility in the Fall of 2003.
